Boats, pebbles and a waterfall below the terraces

The old fishermen's landing of Banyalbufar, at the foot of the village of terraced hillsides. It is a narrow, elongated inlet of pebbles and rock, with huts, a slipway for hauling up the boats and a concrete walkway along the cliff. When it has rained, a freshwater waterfall pours down into the cove.

What you’ll find

Pebbles
Pebbles and gravel, with rock at the sides and concrete areas next to the landing, about 100 × 15 m of beach.
Facilities
None: no beach bar, no toilets, no lifeguard. Bring everything you need.
Little shade
The shore is in the sun. Only the cliff gives some shade, depending on the time of day.
Snorkelling: good
Very clear water and a rocky bottom on both sides. Watch out for boats going in and out of the landing.
Kids, with care
There are steps, pebbles, rock and concrete, there is no lifeguard and with a north wind the waves roll in. Better with older children and a calm sea.
Dogs: no specific rule
We have not found any municipal rule for this cove. Check with the Ajuntament de Banyalbufar.

How to get there

By car and on foot
There is no signposted parking by the cove. The practical option is to leave the car in the village: there is a free open-air car park in the centre and another, larger one at the entrance to the village coming from Estellencs (revolt des Bolcadors). In summer they fill up early. From the centre of Banyalbufar, on the Ma-10, you head down a steep, signposted tarmac street of about 700 metres. The last stretch to the cove is stone steps, so it is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes downhill; the way back is uphill all the way.
By bus
TIB line 202 (Palma, Esporles, Banyalbufar, Estellencs) stops in the village centre. From the stop it is about 15 minutes downhill on foot to the cove.

It is small, and in high summer swimmers mix with people coming down to watch the sunset. The rest of the year it is quiet.

Tips and what to bring

  • Park in the village and walk down. There is nowhere to leave the car at the bottom and the street is very steep.
  • Water shoes. The shore is pebbles and rock, and in places you get into the water from the concrete of the landing.
  • Respect the landing. It is still a working boat harbour: do not take up the slipway or swim where boats come in and out.
  • Save some energy for the climb. The way back to the village is uphill all the way. Bring water.
  • Check the wind before you go. With a tramuntana (north wind) or a mestral (northwest wind) the waves roll straight in.

The cove faces north, towards the open sea. At dusk the sun sets in the west over the sea, and the path down to the port offers one of the best sunsets on the coast.

Can you drive down to the cove?

The street down from the village is tarmacked, but it is steep and there is no signposted parking at the bottom. The practical option is to park in the village and walk down, about 10 to 15 minutes.

Is there a bar or any facilities?

No. At the cove there is no beach bar, toilets, showers or lifeguard. The bars and restaurants are up in the village.

Is there always water in the waterfall?

No. The waterfall depends on the rain: some seasons it pours down strongly and others you can hardly see it.

Can you get there by bus?

Yes. TIB line 202, from Palma via Esporles, stops in Banyalbufar. From there you walk down to the cove.

Is it good for children?

It is not the easiest: there are steps, pebbles and rock, and no lifeguard. With a calm sea and older children, it is fine.

Can you bring a dog?

We have not found a specific rule for this cove. If you bring a dog, keep it on a lead and check first with the Ajuntament de Banyalbufar.
