Portals Vells' nudist beach and a film location

A small sandy cove on the north shore of the Portals Vells inlet, between pine woods and marès (local sandstone) rock. It was the first beach in Calvià to be declared nudist. Its name comes from the film "The Magus" (1968), starring Anthony Quinn and Michael Caine, which was shot here.

What you’ll find

Sand
Sand and seaweed; rock on either side, about 32 × 15 m of beach.
Facilities
None: no beach bar, no toilets, no lifeguard. Bring everything you need.
Little shade
The pine woods reach down to the rocks, but the sand is in full sun. There are no parasols for hire.
Snorkelling: good
Rock and marès on both sides and very clear water. The most interesting parts are along the walls of the inlet, away from the boats.
Kids, with care
The water is usually calm, but the path down is slippery, there's no lifeguard or toilets and it's a nudist beach. With small children, neighbouring Cala Portals Vells is easier.
Dogs: not allowed
Calvià bans pets from its beaches. The nearest dog-friendly swimming spots are Punta Marroig (Palmanova) and Cala des Gats (Costa de la Calma).

How to get there

By car and on foot
Above the cove there's a dirt parking area with no barrier and nothing to pay, marked on OpenStreetMap as the El Mago car park. It's small and fills up early in summer. The Ajuntament (town council) doesn't list it as a public car park on its page for the beach. Drive from Magaluf or Sol de Mallorca following the signs for Portals Vells. From the parking area, walk down a slippery slope to a terrace between the Caló dels Reis and the beach, then over rock and steps to the sand. Wear proper shoes.
By bus
TIB line 105 (Palma - Sol de Mallorca) ends at Sol de Mallorca, just over a kilometre away. From there it's a fair walk along the Portals Vells road.
By boat
It's a popular anchorage inside the Portals Vells inlet. Visit Calvià reports a sand and seaweed bottom at about five metres. Keep clear of the swimming area.

The Ajuntament rates it as a low-occupancy beach. Even so, it's only 32 metres of sand, so in August it fills up with just a handful of people, with boats anchored in front.

Tips and what to bring

  • Comfortable shoes. The path down from the car park is slippery and the last stretch is rock and steps.
  • Bring water and a parasol. There are no facilities in the cove and the sand is in the sun almost all day.
  • Respect the nudism. It’s an official nudist beach: no photos of other bathers.
  • Mask and snorkel. Swim along the marès walls of the inlet, always away from the anchored boats.
  • Leave the dog at home. Animals aren’t allowed on Calvià’s beaches, and that includes this one.

The cove faces south-east, towards the inner part of the Portals Vells inlet, which opens to the east. With tramuntana (the north wind) or ponent (the west wind) it’s usually calm; with llevant (the east wind) a bit of sea comes in.

Is it a nudist beach?

Yes. It was the first beach in Calvià to be declared nudist; the other one in the municipality is Caló d'en Monjo. Swimming without clothes is the norm, although it isn't compulsory.

How do I get there and where do I park?

By car along the Portals Vells road, from Magaluf or Sol de Mallorca. There's a free dirt parking area above the cove; from there it's a few minutes' walk down a slope and over rock.

Are there any facilities?

The Ajuntament's page for the beach lists no sunbeds, parasols, toilets or lifeguard. Bring water and shade. There's a restaurant at neighbouring Cala Portals Vells.

Why is it called Cala Mago?

After the film "The Magus" (El Mago in Spanish), shot here with Anthony Quinn and Michael Caine. You can still see the remains of an old concrete jetty on the rock that appears in the film.

Can I bring my dog?

No. Calvià bans pets from its beaches. The dog-friendly swimming spots in the municipality are Punta Marroig, in Palmanova, and Cala des Gats, in Costa de la Calma.

What rules should I be aware of?

There's no lifeguard. Fires, camping, playing music, fishing and stubbing out cigarettes in the sand are all banned. Swim close to the shore and away from the anchored boats.
