Es Comú, the wild stretch beside s'Albufera
Platja de Muro runs along much of the bay of Alcúdia, but this guide focuses on Es Comú, its natural stretch. It's almost 1.5 km of fine sand with no buildings, between the hotel strip and ses Casetes des Capellans, backed by dunes, junipers and pine woods. It's part of the Parc Natural de s'Albufera de Mallorca (a protected natural park) and has no sunbeds or beach bars.

What you’ll find
- Sand
- Fine sand, with posidonia seagrass meadows further out, about 1486 × 38 m of beach.
- Facilities
- None: no beach bar, no toilets, no lifeguard. Bring everything you need.
- Little shade
- The pines and junipers are behind the dunes. There's no shade on the sand and no parasols for hire.
- Snorkelling: limited
- Sandy seabed along almost the whole stretch, with posidonia further out. No rocks near the shore.
- Good for kids
- The water stays shallow for a long way and the waves are usually gentle. But there's no lifeguard of its own, no toilets and nowhere to buy anything, and you have to walk a little from the car.
- Dogs: not allowed
- Es Comú lies inside the Parc Natural de s'Albufera, where dogs aren't allowed, except assistance dogs.
How to get there
- By car and on foot
- You can't park inside the pine wood. OpenStreetMap shows free car parks at both ends: one where the built-up area finishes, on the north side, and a small one with around 20 spaces at ses Casetes des Capellans, on the south side. In summer they fill up early. If they're full, there's usually more room in the streets of the hotel area, 5 to 10 minutes' walk away. The Es Comú pine wood is closed to traffic, so you get there on foot. There are streets with parking at both ends: to the north, where the Platja de Muro hotel area ends, and to the south, at ses Casetes des Capellans, next to the Ma-12. From either side it's about 200 to 300 metres to the sand. Authorised paths and wooden boardwalks also lead from the road across the dunes. Stick to them.
- By bus
- The Casetes des Capellans 1 and 2 stops on the Ma-12 are right by the southern end of Es Comú. They're served by TIB bus routes running round the bay between Alcúdia and Can Picafort, including the 302 from Palma.

The Ajuntament de Muro (town council) describes it as a quiet stretch, used mostly by local families. The hotel sections, a few minutes away, do get packed in summer.
Tips and what to bring
- Park at one end and walk. The pine wood is closed to cars. It’s a few minutes from the car park to the sand.
- Bring everything you need. Es Comú has no sunbeds, parasols, beach bar or toilets.
- Cross the dunes on the boardwalks. They’re protected and part of the s’Albufera natural park.
- Walk away from the access points. The closer you get to the middle of the stretch, the fewer people there are.
- Leave the dog at home. Dogs aren’t allowed inside the natural park.
The beach faces north-east, towards the bay of Alcúdia, so the sun rises over the sea. With a westerly wind it’s usually calm; when the gregal (the north-east wind) or the llevant (the east wind) blows, the swell comes in.

How do I get there and where do I park?
Drive to either end of Es Comú: where the Platja de Muro hotel area finishes, to the north, or ses Casetes des Capellans, to the south, next to the Ma-12. There's free parking there, and you carry on on foot for a few minutes. The pine wood is closed to cars.
Is there a lifeguard?
Es Comú has no lifeguard post of its own. It's covered by rescue jet skis and by the lifeguards on the neighbouring stretches, Sector II and Capellans.
Is it good for children?
The water is shallow and calm almost all the time. Bear in mind there are no toilets, no shade and no beach bar, so bring a parasol, water and food.
Can I bring my dog?
No. Es Comú is part of the Parc Natural de s'Albufera, where dogs aren't allowed, except assistance dogs.
What are the rules in this protected area?
Keep to the marked paths and boardwalks and don't walk on the dunes. Camping in the pine wood and taking sand away are both forbidden.
What are the stone towers in the dunes?
They're alignment towers. The Spanish Navy built them in pairs around the bay from 1941 onwards so that submarines could get their bearings during firing practice. They were used until 1970.
