Cala Serena (Mallorca): how to get there, parking & tips

A small cove at the end of a narrow inlet

A small sandy beach at the head of a long, narrow sea inlet, between low rock walls with pines. It's in the development of the same name, in the part of Cala d'Or that belongs to Felanitx, next to Cala Ferrera, and it's much quieter than its neighbour.

What you’ll find

Sand: Fine sand, with rock on the sides, about 40 × 20 m of beach.
Facilities: None: no beach bar, no toilets, no lifeguard. Bring everything you need.
Little shade: The pines reach the edge of the sand and give some shade on the sides.
Snorkelling: good: Very clear water and rock walls on both sides of the inlet. Towards the mouth it gets deeper and there's more marine life.
Good for kids: Calm, shallow water with a sandy bottom, but you go down by steps and there's no lifeguard.
Dogs: no specific rule: One guide says dogs aren't allowed, but we haven't found Felanitx's municipal rule. Check with the Ajuntament (town council).

How to get there

By car and on foot: There's nowhere to park by the cove. The Consell de Mallorca (island council) says the car park is about 400 metres away. OpenStreetMap shows car parks about 300 metres away, towards Cala Ferrera. The car park next to the hotel is for guests only. You can drive to the Cala Serena development in Cala d'Or. From the streets above you go down to the sand by steps. From Cala Ferrera it's about 5 minutes on foot along a path.
By bus: The TIB bus stop Cala Ferrera-Cala Serena is about 550 metres from the beach. According to OpenStreetMap, lines 428, 515 and 521 stop there. Check tib.org for which lines and timetables are running this year.
By boat: The inlet has an anchoring area, and in summer there are usually boats and speedboats moored at the mouth.

It's much quieter than Cala Ferrera, but the beach is so small that in summer it fills up quickly, also with guests from the hotel next door.

Tips and what to bring

Get there early. The sand is about 40 metres long and in summer it fills up fast.
Bring what you need. There’s no bar or toilets at the cove; the nearest are at Cala Ferrera.
Mask and snorkel. Swim close to the rock walls of the inlet, heading for the mouth.
Combine it with Cala Ferrera. It’s 5 minutes away on foot and has all the facilities.
Watch out for boats. Boats and speedboats anchor at the mouth of the inlet; if you swim out there, make yourself visible.

The cove faces south, at the end of a narrow inlet, so it’s very sheltered. With the tramuntana (north wind) or ponent (west wind) it’s usually calm; with the migjorn (south wind) or llebeig (south-west wind) some swell can come in.

Where do I park for Cala Serena?

In the car parks and streets of the development, about 300 to 400 metres away. The hotel car park is for guests only. In summer it's best to get there early.

Does it have facilities?

Hardly any. There's no lifeguard and no toilets. At Cala Ferrera, 5 minutes away on foot, there are bars, restaurants, toilets and a lifeguard in season.

Is it a private hotel beach?

No. It's next to a big hotel, but the beach is public and you go down to it by steps from the development.

Is it good for children?

The water is calm and shallow, with a sandy bottom. Bear in mind there are steps and no lifeguard.
